Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Is a referral required in order to be seen by a Chiropodist?

A: Chiropodists are primary care practitioners which mean that you can directly access their services without a referral from your GP.   Some extended health insurance plans may require that you be referred by your GP in order to process your claim for payment.  Our friendly service co-ordinators will assist you in determining if this is a requirement of your plan.

Q: What is a Chiropodist or a Podiatrist?

A: A Chiropodist is a highly trained practitioner specializing in the treatment of diseases and disorders of the lower limb.  A Chiropodist was trained in Canada or the United Kingdom and a Podiatrist attended school in the United States.  Chiropodists and Podiatrists are both licensed and regulated by the Ontario College of Chiropodists, and both assess, treat and create a customized solution for your foot complaint.

Q: How do I know that I need to see a Chiropodist?

A: If foot pain is interfering with normal activities or limiting your participation in sports, you need to be assessed by a qualified practitioner. Even though nearly 77% of individuals suffer from foot pain, only 33% actually do something about it. Why suffer when you can do something about it?

Q: Can I expect to have my foot pain resolved even if I have had it for a long time?

A: Foot pain is highly treatable, but like most conditions, it is best to not postpone diagnosis or treatment.  If you begin to suffer from foot pain, schedule an appointment with your family physician or visit a CanadaPhysio Chiropodist for prompt treatment.

Q: Does everyone with foot pain need an Orthotic?

A: While an orthotic is a very effective tool used to treat many types of foot complaints, not every patient or condition requires an orthotic.  A CanadaPhysio Chiropodist will be happy to evaluate your foot health and create a personalized treatment plan designed to address your short term and long term needs.

Q: What is the difference between a custom made and an orthopaedic shoe?

A: A custom made shoe is usually indicated in cases where there is a significant structural foot deformity that is difficult to accommodate with a regular store bought shoe. These shoes are hand made and custom fitted to impressions of the feet.  An Orthopaedic shoe is a commercially available shoe that has many special and helpful built in features that will accommodate requirements like extra width, extra depth, pronation control, heel depth, shock absorption etc.  A CanadaPhysio Chiropodist will assess your unique case and make appropriate footwear recommendations.

Q: Are orthotics just for people who run or exercise?

A: An orthotic has preventative benefits in addition to be being a proven aid to combat foot pain and disorders and can be comfortably worn by children, adults, and the elderly as well as athletically inclined patients.

Q: Can patients with Diabetes or serious health issues also benefit from orthotics?

A: A custom made orthotic can accommodate structural and functional deformities, deflect pressure, cushion, add shock absorption, and can be instrumental in preventing serious tissue breakdown.  If you have Diabetes, circulatory problems, or any type of Arthritis, ask a CanadaPhysio Chiropodist how you can benefit from an orthotic.

Q: Do children with flat feet need orthotics?

A: As children grow and develop, so the arches in their feet.  For a variety of reasons, some children are delayed or will never fully develop their arches. A CanadaPhysio Chiropodist can evaluate your child and will discuss the benefits of wearing orthotics to encourage proper development and prevent further dysfunction.

Q: What conditions benefit from orthotics?

A: Adults and the elderly are the largest users of Orthotics.  Some adults need Orthotic devices to combat conditions like Plantar Fasciitis, Heel Pain, Flat Feet, High Arches, Biomechanical problems, Arthritis and foot problems related to Diabetes. Many patients report improved quality of life simply from the postural realignment and support offered by orthotics.

Q: How do Athletes benefit from orthotics?

A: Orthotics can accommodate for changes caused by injury or developing conditions. An athlete recovering from a major surgery or injury will often find that an orthotic will help their body heal by encouraging good posture and pressure redistribution.

Q: What is Metatasalgia?

A: Metatarsalgia is a common condition typically causing pain in the metatarsal bones (the ball) of the forefoot.  This condition is often caused by overuse, excessive weight, foot subluxations, arthritis, high impact activity and other factors. In treating a foot condition such as this, CanadaPhysio Chiropodists use a phased approach. Immediate care can reduce the acute pain and inflammation; long-term control of the problem usually requires individually designed stabilizing orthotics.

Q: Why is good foot health so important to patients with Diabetes?

A: As the Canadian population continues to age, the number of individuals being diagnosed with diabetes is increasing. Diabetes has far reaching implications to foot health and well being.  Diabetes can leave a patient at risk for serious complications from simple foot problems like painful calluses and corns that can quickly progress and become difficult to treat diabetic wounds.  Diabetes causes neurological and circulatory complications that impede the body’s ability to feel normal sensations and proper healing and can lead to severe long term health issues.

Q: What are the common treatments for Heel Pain?

A: If you are suffering from heel pain, you aren’t alone. Heel pain is one of the most common foot conditions that patients present with today.  Invasive surgery is not a very effective treatment for these conditions and most people would prefer to avoid surgery if they can!  Fortunately, there are effective treatment options.  CanadaPhysio adopts a  multi-prong approach to treatment aimed at decreasing inflammation, and promoting healing while encouraging better foot mechanical function.  CanadaPhysio clinics are equipped with the most progressive and effective technology aimed at achieving optimal results for these painful conditions. An orthotic alone is often not enough to resolve these conditions.
