Chronic Pain

CanadaPhysio Chronic Pain Management Program:

What is considered Chronic Pain?

The first thing to know, if you suffer from chronic pain, is that you are not alone. On the low end, about one in five Canadians suffers from chronic pain, defined as pain that lasts longer than six months. The different types of pain vary considerably from mild or excruciating, episodic or continuous to merely inconvenient or completely incapacitating.

It is also clear that chronic pain is not only about physical pain but also takes a significant emotional toll on the individual.

The most common sources of chronic pain stem from headaches, joint pain, pain from injury and backaches. However, there are many other types of chronic pain which include the following: tendinitis, sinus pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and pain affecting specific parts of the body, such as the shoulders, pelvis, and neck. Generalized muscle or nerve pain can also develop into a chronic condition.

The origin of chronic pain or Chronic Pain Syndrome, as it is sometimes called, is variable. It commonly originates with an initial trauma/injury or infection however this is not always the case. Chronic pain is challenging to treat medically and is considered to have an unclear aetiology. Some people suffer chronic pain in the absence of any past injury or evidence of body damage.

Because of the mind-body links associated with chronic pain, effective rehabilitative treatment requires addressing psychological as well as physical aspects of the condition. It is normal to experience pain after suffering an injury. However, it is important to take control of your injuries before they become chronic.

Remember that time is of the essence when you are injured. Getting the proper physical treatment as soon as possible is the first step to a healthy and successful recovery.

3 Steps to Getting started:

1. Be referred to our program

The following professionals can provide you with a referral to our Chronic Pain management Program:

  • Family physicians
  • Specialists
  • Allied health professionals
  • Case managers
  • Legal representatives

Please note that most patients we see are referred by professionals, but we do accept self-referrals in situations where an individual wants a custom treatment program without a professional referral.

2. The intake screening

Once referred, you will be required to undergo an initial intake screening. This test will determine whether our program can successfully treat your condition.

3. CanadaPhysio will assist you in qualifying for our program

CanadaPhysio will assist you in determining if you qualify for our Chronic Pain Management Program. During this process we consult with the following: Your Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Insurer, Workplace Safety and Insurance Board [WSIB], Disability Insurance, and/or Extended Health Plan.
